Jammed Compressor Clutch The compressor acts as a pump, pushing refrigerant and water through the AC from one system to the next. Its action is controlled by the compressor clutch, which switches the compressor on and off at specific intervals during the cooling process. This clutch can fail due to age and will jam the compressor on or off. A compressor that jams in the on position continues to run, causing it to overheat and eventually burn out.
