Truck buyers have long considered the Tacoma a jack of all trades, equally good at toting family as towing trailers, hauling cargo, or blazing trails. Completely redesigned this year, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma can do all of that even better. This midsized truck remains as tough as ever, yet now comes with improved powertrains, modernized features, and more. It can easily hold its own and more among its peers, which is why it’s on Car and Driver’s 2024 Editor’s Choice list.
Design and Comfort
The Tacoma’s cabin has new squared-off angles that mean more room for raised seating and additional headroom, making it more comfortable for everyone, but particularly for taller drivers and passengers. Also, the new range of steering wheel and seat adjustments allows you to choose the perfect seating position. The interior has an attractive new contemporary aesthetic, as well.
The Tacoma still offers a more diverse lineup than most of its rivals, with a choice of two configurations for both cab and bed. You can get an extended cab with a six-foot bed, while the Double Cab offers a five-foot bed in addition to the longer one.
Power and Performance
There’s no question that the Tacoma can be a workhorse and it’s extremely satisfying that you can do so much with it with so little trouble. It can haul as much as 1,705 of payload, and a maximum towing capacity of 6,500 pounds, which is enough to pull most mid-sized trailers. Plus, all of the off-road models have the hardware you need to take them almost anywhere.
The entire line is now powered by a 2.4 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which can be paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or eight-speed automatic. You also have a choice of rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Although as rugged as ever, the 2024 Tacoma behaves very well on the highway. Light, accurate steering combined with quick, smooth shifting offers impressively refined handling. The power train is more than enough for merging and passing, as well.
Technology
The cabin’s interior makeover includes a complete technology overhaul. The Tacoma now features an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen and six-speaker audio system with a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM. Some of the trims have an enormous touchscreen that works especially well for maps and exterior camera views.
The infotainment system offers wireless compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. So you can stream your favorite content, use your phone maps, and stay connected whenever you’re on the road.
Safety
All 2024 Tacoma models now feature a range of standard driver-assistance safety features, including:
- Adaptive cruise control
- Forward collision warning with automated emergency braking
- Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
